Overview
Dusko Goes to Sea is the sequel to Dusko Goes to Space, expanding the series with a new educational adventure across the world’s oceans. Full-color illustrations and learning tools introduce young readers to geography, wildlife, and ocean ecosystems, expanding Dusko’s world into a multi-title series published by Lightswitch Learning.
Challenge
Dusko Goes to Space established two approaches to the same style to indicate the hero entering his magical adventure. This sequel does the same. I illustrated the interiors, designed the covers, and created the companion activity book while providing copy editing, photography and web design. I also served as the primary contact with Lightswitch Learning to ensure the project met their publishing standards.
Approach
I developed a consistent visual style that balanced playful storytelling with accurate depictions of maps, animals, and natural environments, while maintaining the magical transition effect. I then translated the artwork into a line work style for the activity book, synthesizing puzzles, tracing exercises, and other activities to reinforce key lessons.
Results
The project built on the success of Dusko Goes to Space, expanding the series’ educational potential and demonstrating its adaptability across formats and subject matter. With an emphasis on ecology and wildlife, Dusko Goes to Sea built on the visual world of the series while offering a fresh, meaningful learning experience for young readers.
