Dusko Goes To Space
Overview
Dusko and his dog blast off into space on an educational journey! Full color illustrations bring the story to life, while additional learning tools help readers learn as they explore. Initially independently published, the expanded series is now distributed through Lightswitch Learning, a division of Sussman Education Company and a leader in K-12 educational publishing.
Challenge
I illustrated and designed Dusko Goes to Space from concept through independent publication, creating the interiors, cover, activity book and flashcards. I built the website, produced photoshoots, provided copy editing and project-managed the creation of an an animated edition.
Approach
It was important to the author to have a magical transition from Dusko’s “real world” to his imagined educational adventure. I explored multiple visual styles before creating a cohesive look across different mediums to achieve this visual shift. I then translated the style into a line-work version for the activity book, and designed additional materials like flashcards. I contributed writing, activity design, and full production management to this process.
Results
The independently published project laid the groundwork for distribution through Lightswitch Learning. It has expanded into a full educational series, gaining a larger audience in the K–12 market and demonstrating the project’s strength as both a creative work and an effective learning tool.
